📰 Fresh Off the Clocktower

☘️ St. Patrick’s Day in Hudson: Green, Guinness, and Good Vibes

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Hudson! Today’s the day to throw on something green, embrace your questionable Irish accent, and pretend you know the words to Danny Boy. Whether you’re in it for the history, the festivities, or just an excuse to enjoy a good beer, there’s plenty to celebrate.

🍀 A Few Fast Facts to Impress Your Friends:

  • 🍀 It’s been a holiday for over 1,000 years! St. Patrick’s Day started as a religious feast and turned into the worldwide green-clad party we know today.
  • 🍻 The Irish didn’t invent corned beef & cabbage—Irish immigrants in the U.S. did! It was an affordable alternative to bacon back in the day.
  • 🥁 The first-ever St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in New York City in 1762—not in Dublin! Irish soldiers serving in the British army started the tradition, and it grew from there.
  • 🌎 The Chicago River isn’t the only thing turning green—cities across the world light up landmarks, from the Sydney Opera House to the Empire State Building.

🍀 Where to Celebrate in Hudson:

  • 🍀 Yours Truly – Serving up Reubens and classic diner vibes. Bonus points if you wear green!
  • 🍻 3 Palms Pizzeria – Because pizza pairs surprisingly well with Guinness.
  • 🍹 Downtown 140 – For craft cocktails with a festive twist.

Now you’ve got some solid St. Paddy’s Day trivia to sprinkle into conversations—use it wisely, impress your friends, and enjoy the festivities. Cheers to a day filled with good luck, great company, and maybe even a little mischief!

Sláinte, Hudson! 🍀✨

🚨 What to Expect:

  • ✅ A statewide tornado siren test at 9:50 AM

🎤 DEI Discussion Takes Center Stage at Hudson School Board Meeting

It was a packed house at the March 10th Hudson School Board meeting, where students, teachers, and residents spoke out about recent changes to the district’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.

At the core of the discussion? The elimination of the DEI coordinator position, which has now been replaced by a new engagement and achievement coordinator role. Former DEI Coordinator Nyree Wilkerson has stepped into this updated position.

The change, approved at a special board meeting on Feb. 28th, came in response to federal guidance requiring school districts to remove DEI programming or risk losing federal funding—specifically, $1.7 million that supports students with disabilities.

📢 What the Board Had to Say

Before public comments, Board President Steve DiMauro explained that this wasn’t just about renaming a role—it was about aligning with the district’s mission and complying with federal law. He reassured the crowd that Hudson Schools remain committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all students.

💬 What the Community Had to Say

A majority of speakers at the meeting voiced support for the district’s efforts to maintain inclusivity despite federal restrictions.

  • 🏫 East Woods teacher Matt McGown emphasized the importance of helping students feel like they belong, no matter what the initiative is called.
  • 👩‍👧 Resident Megan Higgins, whose daughter has a disability, praised Hudson Schools for their inclusive efforts, highlighting how Adaptive Sports Ohio brought wheelchair basketball to Ellsworth Hill Elementary this past week.
  • 📚 Fifth-grade teacher Sharon Nivert spoke about the positive impact of DEI programs on fostering welcoming classrooms.
  • 👏 Several residents praised Wilkerson’s leadership, calling her an invaluable asset to the school district.
  • Some Hudson High School students voiced concerns that these policy shifts could limit classroom discussions or impact programs like Service Learning, which connects students with disadvantaged communities.

👀 Concerns & Criticism

Not everyone was happy with the changes.

  • ❌ Some residents questioned why the program wasn’t cut entirely to save costs and why Wilkerson was placed in the new role without outside candidates being considered.
  • 📉 Concerns were also voiced about student performance and district finances, claiming that some Hudson elementary students struggle with reading and math and warning that the district could be over budget in two years.

🏫 What’s Next?

No matter where you stand on the issue, we can all feel good about one thing-the Hudson Board of Education is putting real thought into these decisions and carefully weighing every factor before making changes.

While DEI as a formal program may be gone, the conversation around inclusivity in Hudson Schools isn’t going anywhere. The district will have to find ways to balance federal funding requirements while continuing to foster a welcoming environment for all students.

🐦 Hummingbirds Are Headed to Hudson!

Spring isn’t just about blooming flowers and unpredictable weather—it also means hummingbirds are making their way back to Ohio! These tiny speedsters are currently migrating north from their winter homes in Mexico and Central America, and they’re expected to start arriving in northern Ohio between April 15-30.

💡 Want to see exactly where they are? Check out the Hummingbird Migration Map at Hummingbird Central! It tracks their journey using real-time sightings from birdwatchers across the country.

🌿 How to Attract Hummingbirds to Your Yard

Want to make your yard a hummingbird hotspot? Here’s what they love:

  • Red, tubular flowers like salvia, zinnias, and nasturtiums (hummers can’t resist them!)
  • Hummingbird feeders filled with a simple homemade nectar (just sugar and water—no red dye needed!)
  • Shallow birdbaths or fountains for a quick sip and splash
  • Plenty of trees or shrubs to give them a safe place to perch

🐦 Who’s Visiting Ohio?

Ohio’s most common hummingbird is the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, with its flashy iridescent green feathers and ruby-red throat. Occasionally, lucky birdwatchers might also spot a Rufous Hummingbird or, in rare cases, a Mexican Violetear—though those are much harder to find.

❄️ When to Put Out Your Feeders

Experts suggest mid-to-late April is the best time to start setting out feeders in Ohio, but if the migration map shows early arrivals, you can put them out sooner. Just be sure to keep them clean and change the nectar every few days to keep the little visitors happy and healthy!

So keep an eye on the skies, Hudson—hummingbird season is almost here! 🐦💨

🏀Western Reserve Academy Girls Varsity Basketball Makes a Championship Run!

One of our readers recently suggested that we give some love to what's going on at Western Reserve Academy (thanks for the suggestion, Kevin!) And we couldn't agree more! So Hudson, let’s hear it for the Western Reserve Academy Girls Varsity Basketball team, who made an incredible run in the 2025 Girls Hoop Series at the Girls National Prep Championship!

This prestigious tournament, held at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford, CT, brought together the top prep school teams from across the country—and our Pioneers proved they belong among the best.

🔥 The Road to the Finals

Led by Head Coach Thomas Adams-Wall, the team showed grit, determination, and undeniable skill as they battled their way to the championship game. Along the way, they secured thrilling victories over IMG Academy (FL) and Newman School (MA).

In the finals, the Pios went shot for shot in an intense showdown against defending champions Tilton School. The game was a nail-biter, but WRA came up just short, falling 52-56 in a hard-fought battle.

This team left everything on the court, proving that hard work, resilience, and Pioneer pride go a long way.
