☀️ The Scoop on Hudson Weather

It's April 7th and there's snow on the ground this morning. Mother Nature is doing us dirty, Hudson! And the weather this week is throwing it all at us — snowflakes in the forecast, rain on the horizon, and just enough sun to keep us hopeful. If you were wondering whether to keep your winter coat or break out the rain boots, the answer is: both.

Bundle up, stay dry, and don’t let the clouds fool you — here’s your spring weather rundown:

  • 🌨️ Today, April 7 – A few morning snowflakes, then cloudy and chilly. High: 44°F | Low: 25°F (Spring, we barely knew you.)

  • 🌬️ Tuesday, April 8 – Breezy and cold with a chance of morning snow. High: 36°F | Low: 28°F (Time to pull that winter coat back out—for real.)

  • Wednesday, April 9 – A few sunny breaks between the clouds. High: 45°F | Low: 35°F (The nicest day of the bunch — but that’s not saying much.)

  • ☁️ Thursday, April 10 – Mostly cloudy with rain moving in late. High: 53°F | Low: 42°F (The umbrella’s getting promoted to full-time duty.)

  • 🌧️ Friday, April 11 – Cloudy with off-and-on rain. High: 53°F | Low: 42°F (The perfect excuse to stay inside and call it “cozy.”)

From flurries to drizzle, it’s a week that’s hard to pin down — kind of like your plans if you're relying on sunshine. Dress smart, stay warm, and know that brighter days are coming… eventually. ☕🌦️

📰 Fresh Off the Clocktower

🕵️‍♂️ So… Who’s Behind The Scoop?

We’ve been getting this question a lot lately:
“Hey, who’s running this thing?”
“Is it the city?”
“Are you local??” 👀

We’re flattered — truly. And while we love the curiosity, we’re keeping the mystery alive. Why? Because it’s more fun that way… and also because it means we can still go to Heinen’s without getting cornered in the frozen foods aisle with story pitches (you know who you are).

What we can tell you is this:
The Hudson Scoop is run by a small-but-mighty team of local Hudson residents who care deeply about this town. We live here, shop here, cheer for the Explorers, and yes — we absolutely order the milkshakes at Flip Side.

We might be your neighbor, your friend, your kid’s classmate’s parent… or the person behind you at Open Door Coffee.

We’re not in it for the spotlight. We’re here because we love sharing good news, local gems, and all the things that make Hudson feel like home. And we’re so glad you’re part of it.

(But seriously — keep guessing. It’s kinda fun for us too. 😉)

🍻🧹 National Beer Day + No Housework Day = Your Monday Plans Sorted

Today, April 7 gives us the kind of mashup we didn’t know we needed: National Beer Day and National No Housework Day. Translation? Skip the vacuuming and grab a cold one — it's basically a civic duty.

National Beer Day honors the end of Prohibition-era dryness with the 1933 signing of the Cullen–Harrison Act, legalizing beer with low alcohol content. FDR even said, “I think this would be a good time for a beer” after signing. Agreed.

And No Housework Day? It’s exactly what it sounds like — a glorious 24 hours where laundry, dishes, and dusting are officially canceled.

Here’s how to celebrate, Hudson-style:

  • 🍺 Kepner’s Tavern
A cozy neighborhood staple with a great beer list and a no-fuss vibe. Park yourself at the bar or patio and pretend your to-do list doesn’t exist.
    📍 Kepner’s Tavern on Facebook

  • 🌿 Green Valley Brewing Co.
Tucked away near Darrow Road, this brewery is laid-back, family-run, and surrounded by — you guessed it — greenery. Their patio is fenced-in, dog-friendly, and perfect for sipping in peace.

Today’s a good day to put your feet up, let the dishes pile, and raise a glass to beer, books, or doing absolutely nothing. Cheers, Hudson! 🍻

📚 Hudson Library Needs Your Voice

If you’ve been reading the Scoop for a while, you know how often we highlight events and programs from the Hudson Library & Historical Society. That’s not just because their calendar is always packed — it’s because we genuinely believe the library is one of Hudson’s greatest treasures. From storytimes to author visits to free technology classes, it’s a place that brings the entire community together.

But right now, the library — and libraries across Ohio — are facing a serious threat.

The Ohio House of Representatives is proposing a version of the state budget that would eliminate the Public Library Fund, which has supported Ohio’s libraries for more than 40 years. In its place? A one-time line item that slashes nearly $100 million from what Governor DeWine originally proposed.

Here’s why that matters:

  • 📉 One-third of Hudson Library’s operating budget comes from the Public Library Fund.

  • 📚 That money helps pay for books, programs, digital resources, technology, and staff.

  • ⏳ The proposed funding level would take us back to what libraries received 25 years ago.

That’s a huge step in the wrong direction — and it affects everyone who relies on the library, from toddlers to retirees.

What You Can Do:
Please reach out to our State Representative Derrick Hall and Speaker Matt Huffman. Let them know how much you value your library and ask them to restore the Public Library Fund to 1.75% of the General Revenue Fund, as proposed by the Governor.

- Or call his office: (614) 466-1177

📬 Contact Speaker Matt Huffman:

- Phone: (614) 466-6344

The Hudson Library has served this community for over 100 years — let’s make sure it has 100 more. We’re proud to stand with them, and we hope you will too.

📚 Meet Travel Writer Mike Tidwell at the Library

Here’s another incredible offering from the Hudson Library — this time featuring award-winning travel writer and climate activist Mike Tidwell on Thursday, April 10 at 6:30 PM.

Tidwell will be discussing his latest book, The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue: A Story of Climate and Hope on One American Street. It’s a powerful, deeply personal look at the impacts of climate change, told through the lens of one small neighborhood just outside Washington, DC.

He spent a full year documenting how rising temperatures and strange weather patterns affected the people, trees, and daily life on his block. The result? A moving mix of storytelling, science, and community resilience — from a climate scientist experimenting with carbon burial to a midwife installing geothermal energy to save her oak trees.

Fun fact: Tidwell’s no stranger to travel writing either — he’s a four-time Lowell Thomas Award winner (basically the Oscars of travel journalism) and the author of six other books. He’s also the founder of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.

📚 David Baldacci is Coming to Hudson!

Okay, this one isn’t happening this week, but it’s such a big deal — and spots are going fast — that we wanted to give you the heads-up now.

On Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 PM, the Hudson Library is hosting none other than #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci for a special event celebrating his new novel, Strangers in Time: A World War II Novel.

Because the main room has already filled up (we told you it was a big deal!), the library has opened overflow room seating — conveniently located right next door with a large video wall streaming the live event. You’ll still be part of the experience and get to meet Baldacci afterward at the book signing.

🖋️ Important to note: David Baldacci will only be signing copies of books purchased at the event — no personal items or previously purchased copies, please!

Strangers in Time follows two teens, Charlie and Molly, as they return to their war-torn hometowns after WWII. With nowhere to go and no one left to turn to, they find comfort and a fresh start in an unlikely place — a small bookshop owned by the mysterious Ignatius Oliver.

This event is hosted in partnership with The Learned Owl Book Shop, who will have copies available for purchase at the event.

Big names, big books, and a big moment for Hudson. Don’t miss it!

🏅 Roll Hud Recap

🏐 Hudson Boys' Volleyball Shuts Out the Bees

The Hudson boys' volleyball team was all business Friday night as they swept Brecksville-Broadview Heights 3–0 on home court — and it wasn’t just a win, it was a statement.

After a tough loss to the Bees last April, the Explorers came out strong and never looked back. Set scores came in at 25–15, 25–19, and a close 25–22 finish in the third. That’s back-to-back wins for the team and a solid bump to a 4–2 season record.

Standout performances:

  • Fisher Zappone led the attack with 9 kills.
  • Jackson Battaglia racked up 25 assists and shared the ace lead (2) with Owen Tandy.

Next up: Hudson takes on Jackson this Tuesday at 7:00 PM in what’s sure to be another exciting matchup. Let’s go, Explorers! 💪

🥎 Hudson Softball Battles But Falls to Nordonia

It was a high-scoring showdown on Friday night as Hudson softball went head-to-head with Nordonia in a conference clash. The Explorers brought the bats and racked up 11 runs — but it wasn’t quite enough to outpace the Knights, who took the win 14–11 on their home turf.

Hudson kept things close all night, including a 5-run rally in the second inning and a final push in the seventh. The offense was on fire, with 13 hits and several standout performances:

  • Bailey Deutsch (Jr) went 4-for-5 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs — a huge night at the plate.
  • Shawna Baylor (Jr) crushed a homer, drove in 2 runs, and reached base 4 times.
  • Claire Eland (So) had 3 hits, while Corinne Stearns (Sr) added 2 more and led the team with 3 RBIs.

Despite the loss, Hudson showed major fight — and their bats were loud. The team now looks ahead to the rest of their schedule, ready to bring that same energy.

Next up: The Explorers are back in action tonight (Monday) with a home game against North Royalton. Let’s go, Hudson! 💙🥎

🥍 Boys’ Lacrosse Battles Central Ohio Teams

The Hudson Boys’ lacrosse teams hit the road this past weekend for a pair of matchups against strong Central Ohio programs — and brought home a mix of lessons and wins.

On Saturday, Varsity took on Olentangy Liberty, the reigning Division I state champs. The Explorers gave it their all but fell to the powerhouse program. Meanwhile, Varsity Blue fought hard against Liberty and clawed back to a well-earned tie.

On Sunday, both squads bounced back in a big way against Thomas Worthington:

  • Varsity Blue dominated in a 14–2 win.
  • Varsity pulled off a close 7–6 victory in a nail-biter of a game.

Next up on the schedule:

  • Varsity Blue heads to Brecksville on Tuesday
  • Varsity travels to St. Ignatius on Wednesday

Both teams are showing grit early in the season — let’s keep that momentum rolling! 💪💙
